TRAINING INFORMATION

Present by:

SA Swallowing Services, Nashville, Tennessee

Training Locations:

  • Nashville, Tennessee

  • Onsite Training at facility

Training Description:

A weeklong, in the field, supervised training experience to administer, score, analyzed, and report findings using the Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) assessment tool. This training is designed to provide the trainee with first-hand experience in the successful completion of the FEES procedure with actual patients referred for swallowing assessments. The trainee accompanies a SASS Supervisor Clinician to nursing home and hospital settings if in Nashville, or to patients referred for swallowing assessments at the onsite location. The trainee will complete the complete clinical protocol: staff clinician interview, chart review, equipment setup at bedside, test stimuli setup and mixing, preparing the patient for the study, administer the FEES procedure using predetermined protocols and procedures, direct the staff clinician assisting with the study, remove and clean the equipment, review the video-recorded FEES study, score all aspects of the study using the SASS scoring regiment, analyze all scored results and interpret findings, and write a concise report of findings. Every aspect of the encounter will be closely supervised by the SASS supervisor. The trainee will be required to meet predetermined criteria as recommended by ASHA and required by SASS to be considered competent to perform FEES independently. The trainee will complete at least 10 FEES swallowing assessments during the 5-day training period.

Trainee Selection Requirements:

  • The presumptive trainee must complete the SA Swallowing Services 16-hour Basic FEES Training Course before being considered for competency training. Rationale: Different FEES training courses teach the procedure differently. To insure the trainee is ready for the SASS competency training and is familiar with the SASS administration protocols, test stimuli, scoring system, analysis system and report writing format, the basic training is required. There is not sufficient time during the competency training week to teach these fundament requirements.

  • The trainee must devote an entire week - Monday through Friday - to complete this training., regardless if the training is in Nashville or onsite. No divided weeks or extended training periods. The onsite trainee must be relieved of clinical duties for the week to complete this training.

  • The trainee must be approved by SASS before paying for the training on this website. DO NOT register for this training until you have been approved and schedule by Dr. Matt Ward or Michelle Skelley.

Training Tuition:

  • Nashville-based training: $3500.00. Additional costs to the trainee include housing, food, and transportation.

  • Onsite training: $3500.00. Additional costs include housing, food, and transportation for the SASS Supervisor for the week.

  • Payment may be paid in full or divided in half.

  • Payment may be made by the individual trainee by credit cared, by a sponsor by credit card, or by sponsor who will be invoiced for the full amount.

  • Credit card payments will be assessed a processing fee by the credit card processing company (Stripe)
